Whilst it might just be one of the most boring subjects here, my recent experience led me to find out that not all family lawyers are  created equally. I discovered that there is in fact a way to save thousands and get lawyers to actually contact you providing a price for their services! Think about it - the ball is then in your court and that put’s you somewhat in control.

The expenses associated with seeking legal advice generally start from the word go. Whilst many lawyers consider their initial consultation free, to put anything in writing they will begin to charge you.

For something as important as a Family Law Case, you will need to see things laid out in writing to fully understand the implications of what is happening. Family legal decisions can impact the rest of your life whether it is divorce, child custody or pre nuptials and therefore, it’s important to get the best advice.

So how can you shave thousands off your legal fees and still get top notch advice?

After undergoing my own legal battle last year, I discovered a service that provides a free consultation online. They will analyze your case and provide you with a written summary outlining the case and the main areas of concerns to address. After this is delivered to you, you have the option of allowing lawyers to contact you and they will be trying to gain your business or simply taking the written outline to a lawyer of your choice.

So why do this at all? It’s easy - I had the document that I was given for free appraised by a number of lawyers who all stated that the document provided was something that would cost around $1250-$2000 in billable services that they would charge the client right from the start as it’s the first thing they need to assess. It was so easy to obtain this (about two minutes online) and instantly saved me over $1000.

The real gold value here though is if you elect to have the lawyer contact you, the ball is somewhat in your court. They have requested to be able to contact you and therefore they have indicated that they need your business. This leaves you in a better position to negotiate the fees. Don’t be affraid to do this.
